What is an Image File Size?
Images are composed of thousands of tiny dots called pixels, and each pixel stores color information as a combination of red, green, and blue values. To store each pixel, approximately 3 bytes (24 bits) of data are required. When an image is large, it contains millions of pixels, meaning the file size can quickly grow to several megabytes.
When a camera or smartphone captures a 10-megapixel photo, it means the image contains 10 million pixels. With each pixel requiring 3 bytes of storage, this results in approximately 30 megabytes of raw data. This is why high-resolution photos can be slow to upload, share via email, or download—they simply contain a massive amount of information.
How Can I Reduce My Image's File Size?
One effective method to reduce image file size is compression. Image compression reduces the amount of data stored without necessarily changing the image dimensions. However, as you increase compression, image quality will gradually decrease as more data is discarded.
Another method is to resize your photo by reducing its pixel dimensions. This approach doesn't inherently reduce image quality—it simply creates a smaller version of your image. Modern cameras capture photos with over 6 million pixels, while most screens display only about 1.5 million pixels. By resizing an image to half its original dimensions, you maintain visual quality while significantly reducing file size.
